From Vulnerability to Resilience: Abdelkader’s Journey Towards Peace (Chad)

At just 24 years old, Abdelkader was on the brink of being recruited by informal groups promoting violent extremist ideologies. Frustrated by persistent barriers to employment, strained inter-community relations, and a life marked by instability and personal trauma, Abdelkader experienced a deep sense of powerlessness and anger. These factors made him particularly vulnerable to radicalisation. The violent extremist groups continue to exert a strong influence over disillusioned youth like Abdelkader.

His turning point came during a workshop on intercommunity dialogue supported by a GCERF-funded initiative. There, Abdelkader was introduced to nonviolent conflict resolution, including alternative dispute resolution techniques, peacebuilding tools and testimonies from former violent extremists who had successfully reintegrated into society. In these sessions, he gained a new perspective on managing conflict through communication, empathy and reconciliation.

Profoundly moved by the practical exercises and peer exchanges, Abdelkader realised that violence only deepens division and suffering. He emerged from the workshop transformed, not only resisting radicalisation himself but becoming an advocate for peace.

Today, Abdelkader serves as a peace ambassador in his community. He leads local discussions on the risks of violent extremism, shares his personal story and encourages young people to reject violence and contribute to peaceful change. His story illustrates how targeted interventions can turn vulnerability into resilience and how investing in local capacity for peace directly prevents violent extremism from taking root.
