Bilel, a young man from Tunis, overcame significant challenges with the support of the GCERF-funded TAKAMUL project, demonstrating resilience, personal transformation, and socio-economic reintegration.
Growing up in a family living in extreme poverty, with a father living with a disability and no stable income, Bilel took on daily labour from a young age to help meet basic needs. In this fragile environment, he became vulnerable to the influence of an extremist group that gradually undermined his beliefs and sense of balance.
A turning point came during a police raid on a mosque in Douar Hicher, which made Bilel realise the dangerous path he was on and the potential consequences for himself and his family. Determined to change, he sought help and was referred to the TAKAMUL project, where he found guidance, support, and concrete opportunities.
With tailored mentoring from an entrepreneurship coach and support from Tunisia Plus, Bilel developed, structured, and launched his own business in the construction sector. This enterprise not only utilises his skills but also allows him to contribute to his family’s income with dignity. He has regained personal stability, renewed self-confidence, and established a meaningful role in his community.
Bilel’s story highlights the transformative impact of targeted support in preventing violent extremism. By addressing economic vulnerability, providing mentorship, and fostering self-reliance, the TAKAMUL project enables young people like Bilel to choose positive paths, build resilience, and contribute to a safer, more inclusive society.
