Ardit’s Story : Creating Safe Spaces for Youth

As part of a grassroots initiative by the Institute for Activism and Social Change (IANS), the “Liri Gero” 9-Year School in the Municipality of Fier implemented a programme to promote safe school environments and strengthen teachers’ and psychosocial staff’s capacity to support students at risk of social isolation or emotional distress.

One such student, Ardit, 15-year-old, had faced persistent bullying due to his quiet, introverted nature. This led him to withdraw socially, avoid class participation, and show signs of anxiety. Through awareness sessions and workshops, IANS trained school staff to recognise early indicators of distress and foster open communication with students.

During a session on empathy and respect, Ardit found the courage to share his experiences for the first time. With ongoing support from the school psychologist and IANS facilitators, he received regular counselling, while teachers adapted classroom practices to be more inclusive. Over time, Ardit’s attendance improved, he engaged more in class discussions, and even participated in a theatre performance organised by his peers.

Reflecting on his journey, Ardit shared: “Now I feel that I’m not alone. There are people I can talk to, and that gives me strength.”

Ardit’s story demonstrates how consistent support can reduce risks of marginalisation and vulnerability to extremist influences. By embedding psychosocial support within the school system, the initiative strengthened trust and resilience, helping at-risk youth feel seen, supported, and empowered to make positive choices.
