BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT

Returnees from conflicts abroad also known as Returning Foreign Terrorist Fighters (RFTFs) are a manifestation of violent extremism in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), exacerbated by the complex socio-political landscape, marked by the nineties conflict, ongoing national and ethnic divisions, and socio-economic challenges. These factors have highlighted the urgent need for effective response to prevent violent extremism.

GCERF began investing in the country in 2022 and till date USD 740,000 has been invested.

OUR INVESTMENT STRATEGY IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

GCERF’s investment strategy outlines a comprehensive approach to address the drivers of violent extremism and guides civil society organisations in designing their programmes.

GCERF funds programmes that:

Provide holistic reintegration support for returnees and their families by addressing psychological, vocational, and social needs to foster long-term stability and reduce the risk of recidivism

Strengthen the capacity of frontline professionals including social workers, educators, and law enforcement authorities directly supporting returnees

Strengthen coordination among government institutions, CSOs, international organisations, and community members to align efforts and ensure a consistent, collaborative approach to reintegration and prevention
