Global Fund to prevent violent extremism seeks 120 million dollars

Geneva, Switzerland, 28 June 2022 – The Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF) is currently raising money to impact 2 million people at risk of radicalisation over the next 3 years. At a meeting of the GCERF governing board in Tirana, Albania, representatives of donors and implementing partners underlined the unique contribution that GCERF, as the only global financing mechanism dedicated to preventing violent extremism, is making for international peace and security.

“GCERF is an original and effective formula of multilateralism in a time when multilateralism is under stress.  Let’s invest in this,” said the Chairman of the Board, Stefano Manservisi.

GCERF has proven success in preventing violent extremism. GCERF has already reached more than 2 million people at risk of radicalisation working with more than 200 local partners.

It operates through five unique features that set GCERF apart from any other organisation working in volatile and conflict-afflicted regions:

1.  Its interventions are highly targeted towards vulnerable communities at risk of generating violent extremists, funding prevention activities that have proven their effectiveness. More than 85% of benefiting communities are not reached by any other international funding.

2. Its credibility, diverse staff and implementing partners have enabled the fund to build trust among communities dominated by suspicion and fear.

3. Its pooled funding structure brings great value for money, on average increasing individual donors’ investments eight-fold.

4. The expertise of staff and partners have made GCERF’s grant-approval and management model, with solid but unobtrusive safeguards, the gold standard within the development sector.

5. And finally, since its creation in 2014, GCERF has built the world’s largest network of local actors preventing violent extremism, an invaluable tool for sharing knowledge.

“One of the key successes of GCERF is the inclusion of civil society in the prevention of violent extremism,” said Iris Luarasi, Director of the NGO Counseling Line for Women and Girls (CLWG), an Albanian GCERF grantee.

A video launched today to support GCERF’s case for investment, spells out the difference the fund makes in the lives of beneficiaries and for the global community: writing peace, one person at a time.
