In early 2026, GCERF, through its partner Dream Organisation, supported a sewing vocational training programme in Anbar for people returning after years of displacement and uncertainty. The programme equips participants with practical skills to build small, sustainable businesses from home, turning hardship into hope and helping rebuild a more stable future for themselves and their families.

At 48, “Amal” (pseudonym) decided it was not too late to begin again. Living in a high-risk area of Anbar and returning after years of displacement from northern Syria, she faced economic hardship, uncertainty, and the heavy demands of rebuilding life after conflict.

Amal found her turning point through a GCERF-funded sewing vocational training programme, delivered by Dream Organisation in partnership with the Fallujah Vocational Training Centre. For her, the training was more than just learning a skill. It was a way to rebuild confidence, regain independence, and create a peaceful path forward for herself and her family.

Despite initial doubts, she committed fully, believing that determination matters more than age. With patience and care, she learned sewing techniques one by one, turning each stitched piece into a step closer to stability.

After completing the course, Amal transformed a small corner of her home into a workspace. With limited tools but strong determination, she began producing high-quality handmade items that slowly earned the trust of her community.

Her journey reached a high point when she took part in a bazaar organised by Dream Organisation, where she proudly showcased her work to the public.
